Goal Setting: Setting Goals
Worksheet
Consider
the bigger picture when setting up a goals worksheet
Some of us, at some time in our lives, have put together a worksheet on
which we have written down some goals. This "setting goals worksheet"
is, we believe (hope!), the start of great things to come, the dawn of
a new era in our lives. We draw a line in the sand and say - this is
where we start afresh!
But in reality, very few of us actually progress any further than our
setting goals worksheet that we have felt inspired to construct.
To confirm this, lets look at that annual rush of goal setting, better
known as New Year Resolutions. In a recent worldwide survey featuring
over 300 000 respondents, the following were the top 10 New Year
Resolutions:
1. Lose Weight and Get in Better Physical Shape 2. Stick to a Budget 3.
Reduce Debt 4. Enjoy More Quality Time with Family & Friends 5.
Find A Soul Mate 6. Quit Smoking 7. Find a Better Job 8. Learn
Something New 9. Volunteer and Help Others 10. Get Organized
There is something pretty scary about that list and it is this: I bet
at least 4 of those goals have crossed your mind, even been written
down on your own goals worksheet, for as long as you can remember
making New Year resolutions! And they pop up year after year.
Why? Because modern day life gets in the way and good intentions make
way for frenzied activities of varying importance, almost none of which
take us closer to reaching our goals - even if we did get as far as
constructing that setting goals worksheet.
And crazier still, most of us know the old dictum: Life will not go
according to plan if you do not have a plan! But we plough on
regardless, getting overwhelmed by the mundane stuff of life, but still
in the hope that something or someone will intervene and we will get
what we want in life.
Sadly, "hope" is not a winning strategy. In fact its not any sort of
strategy.
Which gets us back to our setting goals worksheet. How is that going to
help us? On it's own, probably very little. It will in all likelihood
sink without trace, along with hope and good intentions.
But, if that setting goals worksheet forms part of a larger plan, if it
is an integral part of a well constructed Personal Strategic Plan, then
reaching those goals becomes entirely realistic.
Having incorporated your thoughts, hopes and fears into a structured
personal strategic plan, then, and only then, will you go forward into
a life where meeting your stated goals becomes a common occurence.
Setting goals can be fun, actually achieving them is nothing short of
awesome! Your setting goals worksheet can either help or hinder the
process - the choice is yours.
