Arthritis
is the leading
cause of disability for those over the age of
65. But, what are we talking about when we say
“arthritis”? Actually, the term
“Arthritis” can refer to any one of over 100
different conditions where there is damage caused to the joints of the
body.
And although there are so many different kinds, there is one feature
that they all have in common…pain.
The pain can, at times, be unbearable due to the swelling,
redness,
stiffness, and heat of the joint. The most common areas typically
include the hands
and feet, although the elbows, shoulders, neck, jaw,
ankles, knees, and hips can also experience pain.
Although there is no cure, as of yet, for arthritis, what can you do to
relieve the pain naturally?
One way is through massage
therapy.
Massage therapy has been known for its many benefits since as early as
the 2nd century BC. Although it cannot cure or stop the progression of
arthritic conditions, it does help to relax the muscles and reduces the
pain and inflammation.
Massaging can also be quite effective in increasing the blood
circulation in the affected area. Flexibility and mobility
will
increase. A sense of overall relaxation and wellness can also be
achieved.
In the fifth century, it was Hippocrates who espoused the benefits of
rubbing a joint. Today, that method still works
to relieve arthritis
symptoms.
